Even on his deathbed, his perseverance and will to live remained unbroken. When in October 1921, three years after the revolutionaries had chased him from the throne, a bishop rushed to his sick bed on the Hungarian Sárvár estate, the former Bavarian King Ludwig III reacted. defiantly: “They wanted me to receive the final unction; but I don’t think about scratching it off.” It didn’t help, 100 years ago, on October 18, 1921, he succumbed to the long-term effects of the dysentery he had caught on a senseless trip to the Bulgarian front in 1918.
