Grandma’s owl makes the sisters happy: jewelry fetches ten times the asking price

The sisters Alina and Chantal Göritz can hardly believe the expertise they hear on “Bares for Rares”.

They would have been satisfied with 80 to 100 euros. But the expert promises two sisters from Hagen a significantly higher sum. A bidding war ensues in the dealer room.

“We think they are beautiful, but unfortunately we have no use for them,” say Alina and Chantal Göritz about the brooch that they brought to “Bares for Rares”. The sisters from Hagen got the jewelry from their grandmother, it is in the shape of an owl.

The expert is full of praise for the present piece: “A delightful design,” says Heide Rezepa-Zabel. She explains that the brooch was made by Theodor Fahrner from Pforzheim, one of the pioneers of designer jewellery. The design was made by the artist Max Joseph Gradl between 1901 and 1903, so the piece of jewelry is more than 120 years old.

“Bares for Rares”: The desired price is much higher

Despite the promising expertise, the saleswomen are modest when it comes to the desired price: “80 to 100 euros, we would definitely be happy with that.” The expert has a fundamentally different idea: she rates the brooch at 1,000 to 1,200 euros. But the Göritz sisters make eyes.

Elke Velten-Tönnies does the “Waldi” and starts the auction with 80 euros. Christian Vechtel, Julian Schmitz-Avila and Thorsden Schlößner put up a gripping bidding war, initially driving up the price in small steps of over 300 euros. When the sisters then name the estimated value, the three let themselves be carried away to larger jumps. Schlössner put an end to this with a bold move to 1000 euros. He doesn’t want to resell the brooch but rather wear it on his lapel.

The sisters are fine: They only expected an ice cream sundae, now it’s going to be “a weekend trip with an ice cream sundae”.
