Bar Deck21: Spritz with a view of the Olympiahalle – Munich

With the cold and wet weather it is hard to believe that it is actually (still) August. Instead of enjoying the last summer days of the year outside with an Aperol Spritz in hand, the people of Munich duck under the umbrella, shivering. But all those who do not want to write off the summer completely will find a place of refuge in the Olympic Park in the coming weeks – if the sun dares to come out again at some point. There has been a rooftop bar on the roof terrace of the Olympiahalle for three weeks: the Deck21.

On rain-free days, you can end the evening comfortably on the terrace, far away from the hustle and bustle of the city, and enjoy the view of the Olympic Park. Although you are only two floors above the former Coubertinplatz, which has since been renamed Hans-Jochen-Vogel-Platz, you are immersed in another world: Large parasols are reminiscent of beach bars on Ibiza, while relaxed lounge music lets the hustle and bustle all around you forget. Instead of an upscale clientele, tourists sit here on the roof next to students, young and old people together at stylishly decorated tables.

The concept works: a small menu with a variety of drinks and a different kind of kitchen. In the two top box units, two bar-like sales boxes in the middle of the roof, the drinks and dishes that the guests have to fetch themselves are prepared.

Why the bar didn’t open until August is easy to answer: Due to delivery delays, the operators couldn’t get started earlier. The bar is still “in its infancy”, says Fabian Klüppel, Deck21 project manager. The bar is operated by the catering company Do & Co. But even if you can only open the bar on a few days this summer, this is a good preparation for the coming season. “We have already learned a lot from the changing weather conditions,” says Klüppel. In warmer temperatures, the guests would have different wishes than in cooler temperatures.

The menu is small, but the selection is impressive: In addition to Aperol Spritz (6 euros), the bar offers all aperitif lovers a small, colorful mix of alternatives: the classic Negroni (8.50 euros), an orange-rosemary spritz ( 6 euros) or a basil spritz (6 euros). For those who want to forego alcohol with their aperitif, there is the Perfect Serve (6 euros) made from ginger concentrate, soda and thyme. But also different wines, beers, long drinks and non-alcoholic drinks are on the menu.

Vegetarians and vegans in particular get their money’s worth when it comes to eating. The “Mezze to share” offers a selection of hummus, baba-ghanoush, olive tabbouleh and lentil salad. For 12.50 euros you get three of the starters including naan. So if you don’t want to let go of summer, you can look forward to the fact that the bar is still open until October, and depending on the weather, maybe all of autumn.
