The Russian army has begun an offensive that has been expected for months in eastern Ukraine. Initially, the Ukrainian Defense Ministry reported that Russia had begun bombing and attacking the border region around Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second largest city, early in the morning. “At about five in the morning, the enemy tried to break through our defense lines under the protection of armored vehicles,” the ministry said. “So far these attacks have been repelled and fighting of varying intensity continues.”
