BA-X index higher than ever: workers are still in demand

Despite all the crises, the demand for workers in Germany remains high. This is the result of the latest BA-X job index from the Nuremberg Federal Employment Agency for April.

Despite the economic impact of the Ukraine crisis, the demand for workers in Germany is higher than ever. The job index BA-X of the Federal Employment Agency (BA) was at an all-time high in April with 138 points, as the authority announced today. The index value in April is two points higher than in March and 33 points above the value for the same month last year.

According to the BA, the end of most corona restrictions and the spring revival on the labor market contributed to the upswing in April. Almost all sectors are affected, but especially the hospitality industry.

Labor shortages remain a problem

According to the deputy prime minister of North Rhine-Westphalia, Joachim Stamp (FDP), the lack of workers in some sectors threatens to kill the economy. What is needed is a quick legal implementation of the previous agreement that for migrants an employment contract with a German company is sufficient as legal access to the German labor market. In addition, it is also necessary to lift all work bans.

“We simply can no longer afford to do without anyone who is willing to work,” emphasized Stamp, who is also Minister for Family and Integration in North Rhine-Westphalia.

April data from the labor market

The Federal Employment Agency will announce its labor market statistics for April tomorrow morning. Due to the spring revival, among other things, a decline in unemployment compared to the previous month is expected. In March, 2.362 million people were unemployed. This means that the level from before the Corona crisis has practically been reached again.
