Austria: Bear killed in collision with train – Bavaria

A dead brown bear was found between two train stations in Salzburger Land. According to initial information, he was hit by a train during the night. It is still unclear whether it is the animal that has been sighted again and again in Bavaria.

A brown bear has been killed on a railway line in the Austrian state of Salzburg. The animal was caught by a train near Schwarzach on Tuesday morning, according to the state administration. After two train drivers reported a dead bear to the police on the tracks, the Salzburg state expert for bears and wolves went to the scene of the accident to take DNA samples. This should clarify the origin of the animal.

Train traffic was not affected by the incident. Most recently, a bear had been sighted in Salzburg in Großgmain and Grödig near the border with Bavaria in the past few weeks. A bear has also appeared again and again in Upper Bavaria in recent weeks. It is still unclear whether the animal that has now been killed is the same bear.

A brown bear has also recently been found in the south-eastern district of Oberallgäu. The animal was photographed on Monday and pictures were sent to the Bavarian State Office for the Environment.
