Auschwitz: Virtual Tour for School Classes – Politics

The Auschwitz Birkenau Foundation is working on live guided tours via app. This would allow people all over the world to visit the memorials virtually. Visiting a school class testing the offer.

Suddenly it’s dead quiet in the classroom. The journey through time begins. 1000 kilometers away and 80 years back. Lina van Triel and Ben Fischer are sitting on their chairs in the classroom at the Stiftsgymnasiums in Xanten, the two 9b students are staring spellbound at the bright blackboard, on which the projector is projecting a shaky image: A sandy-haired woman, she is wearing headphones, her T-shirt is on a microphone. A black iron gate can be seen behind her. “Good morning, I’m Jadwiga,” says the Polish woman, “I’m your guide today.” Jadwiga Otrebska chooses the English word, the 37-year-old will later explain why in a follow-up interview: “For German visitors, a guide is usually taboo.”
