At least one dead: Twelve story house in Miami collapsed

Near Miami in the US state of Florida, parts of a twelve-story skyscraper collapsed for an as yet unknown cause. At least one person was killed. Rescue workers are looking for possible further victims.

At least one person was killed in the partial collapse of a twelve-story skyscraper in Surfside near Miami, Florida. As informed by the local police. According to the mayor of Surfside, at least ten other people were injured, two of whom were taken to hospital. The rescue workers are deployed in large numbers and are now looking for other possible victims and survivors.

Why the skyscraper collapsed during the night is still unclear. Local media reports of work on the roof of the building – whether the accident was related, but has not been proven. According to the Miami Herald, there were more than 100 apartments in the house with sea views, also known as the Champlain Towers. It was built in the 1980s.
