As of today, VAT on gas is back at 19 percent

As of: April 1, 2024 4:42 a.m

As of today, the full VAT of 19 percent is due again on gas and district heating – the reduction to 7 percent decided by the federal government in the wake of the Ukraine war is expiring. Experts expect higher costs for consumers.

From today onwards, consumers will again have to pay the full VAT rate on gas and district heating. With the end of the temporary reduction on March 31st, the tax will rise from 7 to 19 percent. According to an energy expert at the comparison portal Verivox, the gas price increases “suddenly” by eleven percent. It can be assumed that energy costs for consumers will increase significantly from April.

Prices reduced as a result of the Ukraine war

In order to cushion the high energy prices as a result of the Russian war of aggression on Ukraine, politicians decided to reduce the VAT on natural gas deliveries and district heating. From October 2022, the VAT rate was reduced to seven percent. The measure was limited from the outset until March 31, 2024. Energy prices have recently fallen again. VAT is a component of the gas price, among other things, alongside the price for procurement and distribution.
