AS Monaco knows its first opponent in the Champions League. Well almost. Launched on a long road before reaching the group stages of September, Niko Kovač’s men will first have to get rid of the winner of the confrontation between Rapid Vienna (Austria) and Sparta Prague (Czechia). Vienna finished second in the Austrian championship last season, behind Red Bull Salzburg. Sparta Prague also finished 2nd, behind Slavia Prague.

The first leg will take place on August 3 or 4, in the Principality. The return is scheduled a week later. In the meantime, the Monegasques will also have started the championship, against Nantes to Louis-II.
If they pass this round, Ben Yedder’s partners will still have a roadblock to negotiate. The potential opponents will come from three confrontations: PSV Eindhoven or Galatasaray (TUR) against Celtic or Midtjylland, Spartak Moscow against Benfica and Genk against Shakhtar Donetsk.
