Was Greenland really as green as the name suggests in Viking times? No one knows for sure, but it’s unlikely. The seafarer Erik the Red called the island that for advertising reasons, reports the Icelandic scholar Ari Þorgilsson in his “Íslendingabók” around 1125. Erik chose a nice name because he wanted to convince people to take the crossing with him and settle on the island.
