Of the many scenarios for ending the war, a negotiated peace seems particularly obvious. By the end of the second week of the invasion, even a military layperson can see that Russia cannot defeat Ukraine – just as Ukraine will not be able to drive the invaders out of the country. The only thing that remains is escalation, which will bring more violence, suffering and death – and with a high degree of probability will also result in a military stalemate.
