Anne Hidalgo proposes tripling parking rates to the vote

It’s going to go bankrupt. This Friday, Anne Hidalgo, mayor of Paris, announced that she was proposing a tripling of parking rates for tall and heavy cars called SUVs, during the vote organized on February 4.

If “yes” wins to the question “For or against the creation of a specific rate for the parking of heavy, bulky, polluting individual cars?” », SUV drivers will have to pay an hourly rate of 18 euros for the central districts and 12 euros for the outer districts, specified his mobility assistant David Belliard (EELV).

“Accident-causing, heavy, bulky and polluting”

Considered “accident-prone, heavy, bulky and polluting” by the municipality, SUV vehicles have been identified as a cause of numerous problems in public spaces in recent years.

“I suggest that we change our parking policy by deciding on a very significant increase in non-residential parking rates for SUVs and 4x4s,” declared the councilor in a video posted on social networks, Tuesday, November 14.

Thermal or hybrid from 1.6 tonnes and electric from more than 2 tonnes

The town hall recalls that over the past ten years, the role of the car has decreased in the city but that at the same time, the average size of cars has increased, particularly with the explosion in sales of SUVs and 4x4s in France. “In less than thirty years, cars have become almost 250 kg heavier. The average weight of a vehicle was 975 kg in 1990, today it is 1,233 kg.” SUVs are also singled out for their weight and manufacturing, which make them more polluting than standard vehicles.

This measure will affect thermal or plug-in hybrid vehicles of 1.6 tonnes or more and electric vehicles of 2 tonnes or more.
