An off-duty firefighter saves an old man who wanted to end his life

He wasn’t on the schedule but didn’t hesitate to take the plunge. Late Saturday afternoon, a professional firefighter from Vendée saved an old man who was trying to end his life by drowning, reports the departmental fire and rescue service (Sdis).

The desperate man, aged 89, had just thrown himself into a lake, at the Moulin Papon dam in La Roche-sur-Yon, when his savior jumped in to bring him back to shore. The man was treated by firefighters upon their arrival.

“Conscious but hypothermic”, he was transported in “relative emergency” to the town’s hospital center.
