This is not the first time that Mayor LFI has been the target of threats. After the refusal of Robert Ménard, far-right mayor of Béziers, to proceed with the marriage of an Algerian in an irregular situation, the elected official criticized this decision before receiving a wave of hate messages. “After the provocations this summer by the far right against me, and in particular the death threats for which I filed a complaint, this incident is not neutral,” recalls René Revol in his message posted Saturday evening.

Mayor LFI, however, assured that “this desire for intimidation will not make us bend in our determination to defend law and justice, against racism and police violence”, and that he would continue to defend “a welcome worthy of refugees”.
He is not the first elected official to be targeted by the far right to the point of receiving physical threats. On May 10, Yannick Morez, mayor of Saint-Brévin, announced his resignation, almost two months after the fire which affected two vehicles and the facade of his house while he was sleeping there with his family. At the time, the local far right criticized him for setting up a reception center for asylum seekers.
