An Ariège family campaigning for home schooling fined

They assume their “civil disobedience” and voluntarily do not comply with the new procedures governing Family Education (IEF). Marjorie Bautista and Ramïn Farhangi, founders of the Enfance libre association, were sentenced Tuesday by the criminal court of Foix (Ariège) to a suspended fine of 500 euros each, which is what the prosecutor had requested.

The functioning of the IEF was modified in 2022 by the “separatism” law. Families not wishing to send their children to school, who previously had to inform National Education and their town hall by declaration, must now submit a request for prior authorization to the Directorate of Departmental Services of National Education (DSDEN) and the motivate through an educational project.

“A carefully considered choice,” says the mother, a former teacher

“This process of civil disobedience is a last resort” in the face of a “deleterious” law, Marjorie Bautista, a former teacher, told the audience, regretting having been met with “contempt and ignorance”. “Our choice of family education is a carefully considered choice,” she also explained. We respect our child’s pace, it is adapted to their development. »

The prosecutor stressed that without prior request from the parents, National Education had not been able to assess their ability to educate their child. According to AFP, around a hundred parents and children gathered in front of the Foix courthouse to support the family.
