Visions of the future have long fascinated people. Science fiction shows us the effects of technological development. Sometimes in the sense of innovation – sometimes as an apocalyptic doomsday scenario. According to the AI, however, the future of cities looks anything but dreary and grey. In 2050, major cities are expected to be greener than ever, sci-fi high-rise buildings house a population geared towards efficiency, futuristic vehicles bring people from A to B. DailyMail.com has fed the Midjourney image generator with forecasts from smart city experts. The result is 10 spectacular images of large US cities. Questions focused on how overpopulation, climate change and technological development are likely to transform the cities of the future. According to a UN forecast, by 2050 almost three quarters of the world’s population (68 percent) will be living in cities. But the most serious changes take place beneath the surface. Smart city experts predict that cities will be governed by artificial intelligence. The Smart Cities would recover all the energy consumed. Fruits and vegetables are grown in vertical gardens. However, the images of the AI are strongly reminiscent of well-known and sometimes very old visions of the future. No wonder – after all, the AI uses existing images that are only put together in a new context. It is therefore questionable whether the major US cities will really change as radically within two decades as predicted by the software.
