Around two and a half weeks after the severe explosion and subsequent major fire in the chemical park in Leverkusen, the last missing person was found dead.

As the police announced today, the last missing person has been found. The fire brigade and police had found the 50-year-old employee dead and identified.

The search for missing persons was thus completed, said the police in Cologne on Friday. However, the clean-up work and the securing of evidence by the fire investigators continue. A total of seven people were killed in the accident on July 27, 2021.

In addition, 31 people were injured in the accident, one of them seriously. According to the plant management, the explosion occurred in the tank farm of the chemical park’s hazardous waste incineration plant, in which production residues from the companies located there are collected and disposed of.
