After the poor performance of his Lower Saxony CDU, state leader Bernd Althusmann is taking action on the evening of the state election: he wants to give up the state presidency.
“I will propose to the state executive tomorrow that I am no longer available for the next office of state chairman. That is my personal consequence of this election result,” said Althusmann, who as the CDU’s top candidate in the race for the office of prime minister against Stephan Weil (SPD) had started. A decision will be made shortly on the further procedure. The state board will meet on Monday at 5 p.m. Althusmann proposed a state party conference at which the state chairman should be re-elected after the autumn holidays.

What’s next for the Lower Saxony CDU?
Althusmann took over the chairmanship of the Lower Saxony CDU from David McAllister at the end of 2016. Since the fall of 2017, he has been Vice President and Economics Minister in Weil’s red-black coalition. When the CDU is reorganized in Lower Saxony, the strategic question will arise as to the direction in which the party should develop. Further to the right than under the more moderate Althusmann? For example, the former Minister of the Interior Uwe Schünemann is responsible for this course in the state association. Or in the direction of the Greens, in order – as in North Rhine-Westphalia and Schleswig-Holstein – to have more options for power in the future? Before the election, it was said that Althusmann had made little contact with the Greens, although it was becoming apparent that working with the party would be a realistic chance of forming a government under his leadership.
