In the Greens parliamentary group in the Hamburg Parliament, there were heated discussions about MP Miriam Block on Monday evening. In the end, a majority voted for her to lose her positions in the group.

The meeting lasted almost five hours, then the decision was made: Miriam Block is no longer spokeswoman for science policy for the Hamburg Greens parliamentary group. 22 MPs voted in favor, 7 were against. Block is also dismissed from the committees for science and internal affairs.

Block voted for PUA on NSU workup

The conflict in the Greens runs deep. The background to this was the dispute over the establishment of a parliamentary investigative committee (PUA) to investigate the NSU murder of the Hamburg greengrocer Süleyman Taşköprü in 2001. The left-wing faction had submitted a corresponding application the week before last, which the block had approved, although the Greens had disagreed with their coalition partner SPD had previously agreed on a scientific review of the NSU complex instead of a PUA.

Group leader: Block has harmed the Greens

The party leadership accused the 33-year-old of having harmed the Greens through their voting behavior and their communication on the subject. The MPs have repeatedly not kept to agreements, so the decision is “the consequence of the behavior of the MPs in recent weeks,” said parliamentary group leader Dominik Lorenzen. The spokeswoman for the Green Youth, Nergis Zarifi, sees things differently: Miriam Block is an asset for the Greens. It is unbelievable that she is now being punished.
