Actions by climate activists: Munich prohibits adhesive protests

Status: 09.12.2022 5:30 p.m

For four weeks, the Bavarian state capital Munich has banned all protests by climate activists in its city area “where participants are firmly attached to the road or otherwise.”

In response to the protests by climate activists, the city of Munich has temporarily banned certain forms of protest. A “general decree for preventive averting of danger” states that road blockades in which participants “connect firmly to the roadway or in some other way” are prohibited if the statutory notification obligation is not observed.

The ban applies to all roads “that are particularly critical for rescue operations and hazard prevention measures” as well as for federal motorways. The aim is to keep main routes open for emergency and rescue vehicles in the city area. The general decree comes into force at midnight and is valid until January 8, 2023.

Action at Munich Airport

Yesterday, activists of the “Last Generation” stuck themselves on a runway at Munich Airport. As a result, the northern of the two runways had to be closed for about 45 minutes. For months, the group has been drawing attention to its goals with campaigns on the streets or in museums or concert halls. The criticism of the actions is great and has triggered debates about how far protests can go and whether there should be harsher penalties.
