What was the cause of the devastating train accident that killed and injured hundreds? The investigations are ongoing – a criminal background cannot be ruled out.

After the serious train accident in India with hundreds of dead and injured, the police are investigating possible criminal negligence. A railway authority had recommended that the police investigate accordingly, as reported by local media.

According to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, the cause of the accident, which killed at least 275 people and injured hundreds, was a fault in the electrical signal.

The political opposition accused the government of drawing attention to a possible criminal background instead of taking responsibility for safety problems at the railway. She called on the railway minister to resign.

Passenger train is said to have received the wrong signal

The clearance work continues. A passenger train is said to have received the wrong signal on Friday and therefore drove onto a platform where a freight train was standing, the “Times of India” reported, citing an official from the authorities. He crashed into the freight train at high speed. A second passenger train is said to have crashed into the derailed wagons.

Dozens of bodies remain unidentified today, Odisha state chief Pradeep Kumar Jena said. Many relatives tried to identify the victims, some of whom were severely disfigured, in several morgues.
