A museum offers to get tattooed among the works

You don’t even have to look for the store to leave with a souvenir. Saturday, your arrival at Museum of naive art and singular arts (Manas) from Laval in Mayenne can be written on your skin for life. Six tattoo artists were in fact invited by management to come and tattoo visitors there all day long. They will be distributed in the different rooms among the 250 works.

“They were specially chosen because their work echoes the themes that we are exploring here,” reports Cyrielle Langlais, deputy head of the art museums. The visuals of the works in the rooms were sent to them, and they were inspired by them to create their flash drawings. It’s quite fun to be able to compare. » Artists, like the Nantes tattoo artist Bengal, have for some already published their board on their Instagram accounts, where reservations are open.

“An artistic dialogue”

The event, called “Piqués d’art, de la toile à la skin” and described as “quite unique” (the Angers Museum of Fine Arts had invited three tattoo artists to its rooms at the beginning of January), was prepared from long time. “It is our habit to invite artists to take a different look at our collections,” explains Cyrielle Langlais. It seemed interesting to us to turn to tattoo artists this time because like many of the artists exhibited here, many are self-taught in their techniques. Which creates a real artistic dialogue. »

The curious will also be able to participate in this exchange since the museum will be normally open to the public: the tattoos (limited to the arms and legs) will be done before their eyes, without a screen, so as not to mask either the creation of the drawing or the works which will surround the scene. “We want to remember that museums are open places where lots of things happen, where we can cross paths with creative fields,” concludes Cyrielle Langlais. This sometimes takes the form of unexpected meetings. »
