A centenarian bequeaths eight million euros to her municipality

The law of series. After Villeneuve-Loubet a few days ago, it is another locality in the Alpes-Maritimes department which announces a providential inflow of money. And not least. In the small town of Roquefort-les-Pins, the municipality has just accepted the inheritance of nearly 8 million euros left by one of its citizens, who died last year at the age of 100.

Single, childless, Romaine Carlès had written her will “twenty years ago”, explained the mayor to Nice morning, but the municipality was not aware of it. And even if it was clear that the centenarian was “very attached to the town”, “it was a real surprise”, for Michel Rossi. “Nothing let us think of a legacy and even more of this order”, he was surprised in the columns of the regional daily.

To build a school

The sum in question, exactly 7,956,335 euros, resulting from several properties, must still be released from certain charges. But it will in any case count in the finances of this municipality of 7,300 inhabitants. In particular for the construction of a school, in accordance with the wishes of the deceased, which also include the maintenance of her funerary monument. The return of money will also allow the municipality “to help finance ongoing projects”, such as the redevelopment of an old building “to make it a cultural center”, detailed the elected official with Nice morning.

He specifies that the town hall of Roquefort-les-Pins will also have to “ensure that the SPA”, the Society for the Protection of Animals, is awarded another bequest of 679,687 euros, present in the bank accounts of Romaine Carlès. She had meant it in her will.
