The presidential election is in less than 100 days! In view of this major democratic deadline, 20 minutes set up, at the beginning of December,
an ad hoc unit intended to cover the campaign. And this week, several initiatives with which we are associated are officially launched, with a common goal: to increase our interactions with you.

“Since its creation nearly twenty years ago, 20 Minutes has focused on creating, with its readers, a real community,” underlines Armelle Le Goff, Editorial Director. With the launch of these new partnerships alongside leading players, we are taking a further step in interacting with the 3.7 million people who read us every day, especially young people. “

  • Promote registration on the electoral roll with the A voted association

According to one study published in 2017, 51% of 25-29 year olds were badly registered on the electoral rolls. Classic scenario: after leaving the family home, the young adult remains registered in his parents’ polling station … now far from his new residence. However, this poor registration on the electoral rolls constitutes a major factor in abstention.

To encourage young people to correct their registration – even to register at all -, the A voté association has developed, in collaboration with the Meta group (new name of the Facebook group) and in partnership with West France* and 20 minutes, a “chatbot” available on WhatsApp. Launched this Tuesday, it allows every citizen – by sending “Hello” to +33 6 22 26 69 50 or by clicking on this link – obtain reliable information on the procedure for registration on the electoral rolls. And, if necessary, to be redirected to the online procedures available on the site
service-public.fr.

“We fear a fairly strong abstention among young people in the presidential election, which is quite new, since this ballot generally experiences fewer participation problems”, underlines Flore Blondel-Goupil, co-president of the A voté association, created after record abstention from regional and departmental 2021 – especially among young people. And to resolve his electoral situation, it is not too late, she continues: “The fact that the deadline for registration on the lists has changed and has gone from December 31 of the previous year to the beginning of the month of March is not necessarily known to everyone. “

“We are going to help young people find their way to the polls,” says Elisa Borry-Estrade, responsible for public affairs at Meta France. We have been working on civic engagement for several years. When, for the municipal elections of 2020, we published messages on registration on the electoral rolls on the news feed of Facebook users in France, this led to around 500,000 clicks to the service-public.fr site. “

  • A “compass” to position oneself in the face of populist ideas

“Are you a populist? “This is the question, willingly provocative, to which Cevipof – the Center for Political Research of Sciences Po – invites you to answer using its” compass “launched on Wednesday January 12, 2022 in partnership with West France and 20 minutes. Entitled “Vox populi – The index of populisms” and clarification
as part of a university research project, this application is in the form of a series of questions allowing “everyone to reflect and position themselves on the issues of this campaign and the proposals of the main political leaders”, explains Thomas Vitiello, doctor in political science member of Cevipof . Populism, as we recall, refers to political speeches aimed at opposing the people to the elites.

“This tool is an opportunity for each user to take stock with himself and stimulate personal reflection on the ideas, and not on the controversies of the campaign,” he continues. And, why not, to discover that populist proposals are not necessarily the prerogative of candidates identified as such. This “compass” will be supplemented, as of March, by a second application specifically designed to situate you in relation to the presidential candidates who have gathered the 500 sponsorships. A device of which 20 minutes has been involved since 2012.
