1-1 in the 90th + 3: Real Madrid suffers a late shock against Atlético

A prank from Brahim Díaz, whose starting eleven only came about a few minutes before kick-off, wasn’t enough in the end. Real Madrid failed to take a lead against Atlético over time and conceded the 1-1 in stoppage time. In the table, the Royals are now not four, but still only two points ahead of FC Girona, their next opponent.

Real Madrid concede a late equaliser

MADRID. The big Madrid derby between Real and Atlético hasn’t had much of a chance of finding a winner after 90 minutes recently. Just as recently in the semi-finals of the Supercopa de España (3:3, 5:3 n.V.) and in the round of 16 of the Copa del Rey (2:2, 2:4 n.V.), so was the case on Sunday in the exchange of blows the LaLiga second half of the season. In front of 76,732 spectators at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu, the Royals couldn’t get past a 1-1 draw against their city rivals.

Brahim Díaz took the lead in a relatively leisurely showdown (20′), after which Marcos Llorente shocked his former club in added time (90’+3). The white ballet missed out on extending its lead over primary pursuers FC Girona in the table to four points. Instead, it remains at two points. The Catalans couldn’t get past a 0-0 draw against Real Sociedad at home on Saturday. The gap to Atlético remains ten points after matchday 23, FC Barcelona is only eight away.

Real’s next top game awaits next weekend. In tabular terms it is even larger. Girona comes to the Concha Espina (Saturday, 6:30 p.m., in REAL TOTAL-Live ticker and at DAZN). Then the Merengues could pull away with five more points.

Real Madrid: The lineup against Atlético

Antonio Rüdiger didn’t manage to get fit in time. The Berliner suffered a hematoma on his left knee against FC Getafe (2-0) on Thursday and was therefore not even on the bench. To do this, Daniel Carvajal had to deal with Nacho Fernández inside, while Lucas Vázquez was allowed to start at right-back. Andriy Lunin guarded the goal for the third time in a row.

Things got wild in the minutes before the run-in: Vinícius Júnior finished the warm-up earlier, while Joselu took longer to get ready than his colleagues. At first it was said that Vinícius would remain in the starting eleven, then a Joselu appearance was announced in the stadium. In the end, Brahim came onto the pitch.

  • This is how Real Madrid played: Lunin – Vázquez, Carvajal, Nacho, Mendy – Valverde, Camavinga, Kroos, Bellingham (88. Ceballos) – Brahim (71. Joselu), Rodrygo (76. Modrić).

Highlights of the game: Brahim shoots Blancos in front

  • 3rd minute – First warning shot: Brahim is on the edge of the penalty area, shoots from a half-right position, but doesn’t pose any major problems for Jan Oblak. First good opportunity. Los Blancos set the tone in the first few minutes and immediately looked for a way on the offensive.
  • 20th minute – Brahim makes it 1-0: The leadership! Brahim scores 1-0! By a coincidence, the Bernabéu is celebrating. Toni Kroos plays the ball high on Real’s right side, targeting Vázquez. Rodrigo Riquelme jumps up, goes in between, but heads the ball straight into the foot of Brahim, who then looks for Jude Bellingham in the box. The ball deflects back to the right side to Vázquez, who is also looking for the number 5. Again the pass to Bellingham doesn’t work, this time Koke intervenes. The ball ricochets from him to the feet of Brahim, who has no trouble from close range and leaves the net fidgeting.

  • 23rd minute – Lunin with an important act: Diego Simeone’s team is challenged after the Real goal and is also dangerous. Axel Witsel heads a Riquelme cross from the left side. Lunin takes a few steps out, then gets to the ball with his left hand and deflects it towards the corner. Important act!
  • 24th minute – Atlético dangerous again: Things also get tricky at the next corner. Left-footed Antoine Griezmann kicks the standard from the right side sharply onto the first post. There, Stefan Savić climbs up to head the ball, which just misses the far post. Lucky.

Highlights of the game: Atlético’s 1-1 result is withdrawn

  • 48th minute – Atlético’s 1-1 is conceded: Damper shortly after the break. Again Griezmann takes a corner very close to the goal, this time Savić is more successful. But: The goal was conceded by the referee team because Saúl Ñíguez was offside close to Lunin, who apparently disturbed the Ukrainian too decisively.
  • 54th minute – Good chance for Kroos: Kroos finishes centrally just before the penalty area and shoots to the side with his full instep. Oblak parries the hard attempt.
  • 66th minute – Real leaves it 2-0: Great chance to make it 2-0! Real counterattacks in a four-on-three. Federico Valverde picks up the pace, then passes to the right to Rodrygo Goes, whose shot is saved by Oblak. The Uruguayan would probably have served Bellingham better on the left, but perhaps made the wrong decision.
  • 70th minute – Big chance Brahim: Dangerous again! Brahim moves into the penalty area on the right side, then hits two hooks and narrowly misses the far corner. Almost 2-0! Shortly afterwards, the number 21 gave way to Joselu to much applause.
  • 76th minute – Atlético dangerous: Almost 1:1! Ferland Mendy misused the ball in his own half, whereupon substitute Ángel Correa fed Griezmann in the middle. The Frenchman stands right in front of Lunin and tries it with a heel. The Ukrainian parries.
  • 90th + 3 minutes – Real concedes the 1:1: Llorente heads late to make it 1-1. Memphis Depay heads a ball high from midfield. A shock for Real. Nacho doesn’t look good, doesn’t get into the header duel with Llorente, but only hesitantly lifts his foot.
