A very early and a very late goal put EHC Red Bull Munich in a problematic situation in the Champions Hockey League (CHL). On Tuesday evening, the Munich team lost 3: 4 at home to the Swiss champions EV Zug, slipping to third place in Group D. In order to qualify for the knockout round, they have to win the final group game in Zug next Wednesday.
From Munich’s point of view, the start of the game could hardly have been more unfortunate. Only 23 seconds were played when the Swedish defender Christian Djoos served the Swedish striker Carl Klingberg so precisely on the far post that the 2017 world champion only had to hold out his stick to make it 1-0. Justin Schütz (5th), Philip Gogulla (6th) and Andrew MacWilliam (15th) tested the reactions of the Swiss national goalkeeper Leonardo Genoni, Frederik Tiffels was unlucky when he hit the post in the majority (12th). The Swiss were always particularly dangerous when the Klingberg series or those around captain Jan Kovar were on the ice. In the middle third, Munich had big problems with the speed and intensity of the Swiss, Danny from the Birken in the EHC goal parried several times. Fabrice Herzog quickly equalized for the biting Swiss (38th). Tiffels’ repeated lead after nice preparatory work by Parkes (45th) was equalized by Dario Simion in a thrilling game (52nd). 26 seconds before the end, Kovar brought the Swiss victory after an inattention from Aus den Birken – and brought the Munich team under pressure in the last group game.
