The visit of the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj to the USA had been eagerly awaited. Zelenskyi had not left his country since the war began on February 24 of this year. After meeting US President Joe Biden in the White House, Zelenskyj then gave a speech in the US Congress. It was a joint session of the Senate and House of Representatives.

When the Ukrainian President entered the congressional hall, applause erupted for several minutes. The deputies and senators received Zelenskyj with standing ovations. The Ukrainian president stood at the lectern, deeply moved – in an olive-green army sweater and matching trousers. And then he started his almost half-hour speech, which was repeatedly interrupted by applause.

Despite all the adversities and doomsday scenarios, Ukraine has not fallen, Zelenskyy said. Ukraine is alive and well. Selenskyj thanked urgently for the support of the USA. “Your funds are not alms,” emphasized Zelenskyj. They are an investment in global security and democracy, and Ukraine will handle them with the utmost responsibility.

Biden promises aid package worth billions

Earlier, at a meeting in the White House, US President Biden Zelenskyy pledged a new $1.85 billion military package for Ukraine, including a Patriot anti-aircraft system to protect the country Zelenskyj had been asking for months. The Patriot system can also repel aircraft or missiles at a greater distance. It is considered likely that Ukrainian soldiers will be trained in using the system at the US military training area in Grafenwoehr, Bavaria.

Biden stated that Russian President Putin has no intention of ending this cruel war. And Biden announced: “The US will continue to stand by Ukraine – as long as it is necessary”.

President Zelensky told Congress he hoped Congress would continue to support Ukraine on a bipartisan basis, as Republicans could use their majority in the House of Representatives to block war aid starting in January. This fight will decide the world in which children and grandchildren and their children and grandchildren live.

Then the President of Ukraine presented the Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, with a flag from the eastern Ukrainian frontline town of Bakhmut signed by soldiers fighting there. The flag is a symbol of victory. “We stand firm, we fight and we will win because we are united: Ukraine, America and the entire free world,” says Selenksyj.

And while Pelosi and Vice President Kamala Harris held the Ukrainian flag in their hands – Zelenskyi bid farewell by wishing everyone “merry Christmas and a happy – victorious – new year”.
