The essence of the “Beatles”? Well: “Something that will seduce you. And something that could kill you.” The new album by the great pianist Brad Mehldau.

To have clarified the fronts here straight away: The whole project is wrong. At least from a pop point of view, but that applies here absolutely, and now says (careful, the highest danger of truism): the beatles, that’s boss level, final plateau, basically untouchable by worldly fat fingers. Their music is flawless, Bach fugue perfect, in the songwriting anyway and in the arrangements too, but unfortunately usually even in the performance. It’s ridiculous to cover them. And it is extremely dangerous to interpret them.
