What do pitchforks have to do with peace? When Tanja Maljartschuk was invited to the Osnabrück peace talks on October 3rd, she was amazed: for a memorial in front of the town hall, the artist Volker-Johannes Trieb had stacked more than a thousand pitchforks and sunk their tips into pieces of wood as a sign of non-violence. “And what do you do if someone attacks?” thought the Ukrainian writer. “I would keep a pitchfork in the basement, just in case.”
