Against the background of the Jian G. case, Federal Justice Minister Marco Buschmann Report from Berlin warned against further secret service activities within parliaments. “We have to assume that we will carry out further unmaskings in the next few months,” said the FDP politician. However, public prosecutors did not investigate parties, but rather people.
Germany has “of course long since become the focus of authoritarian powers,” Buschmann continued. These powers also made use of secret service means. “If you love your country, you don’t sell it,” said the FDP politician. Jian G., who is in custody for suspected espionage for China, is said to have also offered his activities to German intelligence services.
Jian G. was arrested on Monday. He worked for the AfD’s top candidate for the European elections, Maximilan Krah, and was fired after the revelations.

“We are proud that in a democracy we have self-confident parliaments that control the government even in confidential matters,” said Buschmann. If this is made impossible, it would be “a terrible attack on the functionality of our democracy.”
The first and most important task for all serious democrats is to gain the trust of a broad majority of people. They would make a better offer than authoritarian populists.
Legal regulations, for example in the police, could also make a contribution. “But it cannot replace the fact that serious Democrats have to achieve one thing: that the vast, broad majority in this country vote for democratic parties.”
