World Cup goalscorer Just Fontaine dies

He will probably forever remain the man who has scored the most goals in a World Cup. It was in 1958, in Sweden, where the France team had reached the semi-finals for the first time in its history, and Just Fontaine had since belonged to the legend of world football thanks to his 13 achievements. The former striker of Reims and the Blues died on Wednesday at the age of 89, his family announced to AFP.

End of career at 28

Selected 21 times in the France team, he formed a formidable duo with another Rémois, Raymond Kopa, both with the Blues and in the club, before Kopa left for Real Madrid. Unfortunately, Fontaine had to stop his career at the age of only 28, because of a double leg fracture in 1962. He still had time to score 259 goals in 283 games, since his debut in Morocco in 1950 (he was born in Marrakech in 1933).

Later becoming a coach, he took charge of the France team in 1967, before being ejected after two games. His passage at the head of PSG will be more fruitful. He will remain as the coach who brought the club from the capital to the first division, from its first season, in 1973-1974.
