The World Cup draw will take place in Doha this Friday evening. The DFB-Elf threatens a strong opponent. The draw will be broadcast on TV.

With the World Cup draw, the winter tournament in the desert is approaching. The soccer World Cup takes place from November 21st to December 18th in the Gulf state of Qatar. National coach Hansi Flick and the German national soccer team will find out their opponents for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar this Friday from 6 p.m. our time. From 5.55 p.m., ARD broadcasts the event in the “Sportschau”. Also on one of your own Website of the world football governing body Fifa you can follow the draw live for free.

In the group draw at the Congress Center in Doha, the DFB selection faces a tough opponent. Germany was only sorted into pot two. Possible constellations would be a group with record world champions Brazil, Poland and Cameroon – but also one with hosts Qatar, Tunisia and the winner of the qualifier New Zealand against Costa Rica. Among them are three placeholders for games to be played in the summer.

World Cup draw could mean tough opponents for Germany

Before the draw, Jürgen Klinsmann gave a rational answer to the same question about the advantages of a difficult or a supposedly easy World Cup group. “The group phase means two go further,” said the former national coach of the German Press Agency. “When you get a huge chunk – Brazil, Argentina – you take it as it is.” In the convention center of the Qatari capital, the DFB selection is threatened with exactly that: a tough one.

In pot one, on the other hand, in addition to the supposed lucky ticket Qatar as host, record world champions Brazil, Belgium, France, Argentina, England, Spain and Portugal are seeded.

“I believe that the German team plays on an equal footing with everyone and is self-confident enough to say we’ll go through the group,” said Klinsmann (57), who oversaw the German selection at the 2006 home World Cup and until took third place. “And then everything is exciting in the knockout system anyway, anything can happen there.”

The start is of great importance. “I think you generally want to win the first game,” said Klinsmann, world champion as a player in 1990 – including after an opening win against former Yugoslavia (4-1). “Going into the tournament with a three-pointer is extremely important. If you can only manage a draw, then you’re under pressure.”

The selection of national coach Hansi Flick initially avoids the classic against the neighbors Netherlands. Oranje is also in pot two – like Mexico, Croatia and Denmark. “I wasn’t surprised, Holland was surprised,” said former Dutch international Rafael van der Vaart (39) to dpa on Monday evening in Doha, looking back on the 1-1 draw between the two countries last Tuesday in Amsterdam. “They played outstandingly for 60 minutes and we didn’t have a chance. Germany is great, strong.” The DFB selection is a “great team”.

From pot three, Germany could threaten, among other things, African champions Senegal – or Morocco, Serbia or Poland with Bayern Munich’s world footballer Robert Lewandowski. In pot four there are only five teams that are also sure to be there. Because of the playoff games still to be played, three balls are placeholders for the respective three winners. Ecuador or Saudi Arabia, for example, could be German opponents.

“That’s the nice thing about a World Cup, the feeling of uncertainty,” said Klinsmann. “How do the ones from the other continents work? But that’s what makes it so exciting.”
