According to his widow, the well-known US soccer reporter Grant Wahl, who suddenly collapsed while reporting on the World Cup in Qatar, died of an aneurysm. An autopsy carried out in New York revealed that the 49-year-old sports journalist died from a rupture of a “slowly growing, undiscovered ascending aortic aneurysm”, Wahl’s widow Celine Gounder said on Wednesday in the online medium Substack.
Wahl collapsed in the press box at the Lusail Stadium in Doha last Friday during the World Cup quarterfinal match between Argentina and the Netherlands. His body was taken to New York on Monday, where the autopsy was performed. “No resuscitation could have saved him,” said Gounder, a renowned epidemiologist.
