World Athletics Championships 2023 – decathlon: Leo Neugebauer misses the first German medal – gold for Pierce LePage

Leo Neugebauer ended the decathlon in fifth place with 8645 points. In the end, the college student was 111 points short of bronze.

Pierce LePage crowned himself the new “king of athletes” with a strong 8909 points ahead of his compatriot and Olympic champion Damian Warner (8804), bronze went to Lindon Victor (8756/Grenada).

Manuel Eitel (8191/Ulm) came in eleventh, European Champion Niklas Kaul (Mainz) had to stop the decathlon due to foot problems after the high jump.

Neugebauer had improved Jürgen Hingsen’s old German record to 8836 points in June and traveled to Budapest as number one in the world, for a long time he was on course for a medal – but a weak start to the second day with 14.75 s over 110 m hurdles and 47.63 m with the discus made the chances of precious metal dwindle more and more.

Decathlon: Neugebauer with a personal best in the javelin throw

Although he showed a good pole vault with a jump of 5.10 meters and followed it up again with a personal best (57.95 m) in the javelin throw, in the end it was only enough for fifth place.

So the wait for the first big success in the German team continues. Julian Weber (javelin throw) still has a good chance at the end of the World Cup on Sunday.
