“Wonka” with Timothée Chalamet: First trailer for the fantasy prequel released

Watch the video: chocolate, magic and Hugh Grant as Oompa Loompa – “Wonka” in the funny trailer.

“Wonka” tells the backstory of “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”. The trailer that has now been released gives a first glimpse of the long-awaited film adaptation starring “Dune” star Timothée Chalamet.

Lots of chocolate, lots of magic and little men who go by the name “Oopma, Loompa”: With “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” in 2005, star producer Tim Burton kidnapped us into the magical world of Willy Wonka. Almost 18 years after the release of the fantasy hit, Warner Bros. has produced a continuation of the sugary chocolate world, which tells the history of the great candy manufacturer Wonka. Now the first trailer for “Willy Wonka” has been released, which gives promising insights into the long-awaited fantasy film.

“Wonka” starring Timothée Chalamet

In the prequel to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Dune star Timothée Chalamet plays the young and inventive Willy Wonka, played by Pirates of the Caribbean star Johnny Depp in the original film. The film adaptation of the prehistory was already in the room in 2018. The production team said at the time they wanted to answer the question of how Wonka became the mysterious, secretive chocolate maker he is in the main film. Dance and singing performances are also planned.

The Trailer shows: Like Depp, Chalament fits into the younger version of Wonka’s headstrong, creative personality as if he’s never done anything else. You can see the 27-year-old acting in a purple velvet coat, top hat and walking stick – the iconic look that viewers are already familiar with from the main film. He sets out to fulfill his dream of owning his own candy factory. And even if the industry is highly competitive and initially nobody believes in him, he sets out to develop the best chocolate in the world.

Visually stunning scenes and magical creatures

You see Wonka in the jungle in search of the perfect cocoa bean, get insights into the early days of the chocolate factory and learn how he gets to know his hard-working helpers, the Oompa-Loompas. And the trailer reveals that one of the iconic characters is being embodied by Hollywood star Hugh Grant. As a small man with orange skin and green hair, Grant shows himself in what is probably his most unusual role to date – and puts on an original dance routine in a glass. The first scenes are visually stunning, detailed and come with the usual playful fantasy character, just as you remember the colorful Wonka world.

“Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” is based on the children’s book of the same name by Roald Dahl. The first film was made in 1971 in the form of a musical starring Hollywood star Gene Wilder, and 34 years later Warner Bros. helped to invent the mysterious fairytale world Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka. The adaptation by Burton, who already had great success with Depp with blockbusters such as “Edward Scissorhands”, “Ed Wood” or “Sleepy Hollow”, was nominated for numerous Oscars and grossed around 475 million US dollars.

The prequel is directed by Paddington director Paul King. In addition to Chalamet and Grant, the film also stars “Keanu” actor Keegan-Michael Key, “The Crown” actress Olivia Colman and “Mr. Bean” Rowan Atkinson.

“Willy Wonka” will be released on December 14, 2023 in German cinemas.
