With this setting, unknown numbers will no longer call you

WhatsApp has an ingenious protection function. This way you can mute calls from unknown people and protect yourself from spam and telephone scams via the app. How to set the function and update your data protection check.

The mute function on WhatsApp can do this

You know what it’s like: Suddenly a call comes in from an unknown number on WhatsApp and you don’t know who is behind it or whether you should accept the call. Calls from numbers that you do not have saved in your contact list can also be spam or scam calls. Not only are they annoying, they should also be taken with caution. Fraudsters use tricks that are usually not immediately obvious: they may cheat you into a contract without you consciously noticing it during the phone call, or they may entangle you in one of their scams. This can have far-reaching consequences.

That’s why WhatsApp’s new mute function comes in handy. With the setting “Mute calls from unknown people” incoming calls from people you do not know are automatically sorted out and spam calls or scams are also ignored. Your smartphone will no longer ring at all if you receive a call from a number that is not saved in your contact list. Possible calls from unknown numbers will then be displayed in your call list and in your notifications.

This is how you can activate the protection function

In the WhatsApp app, go to “Privacy” under “Settings” and then click on “Calls”. There you can move the small slider to the right in the “Mute calls from unknown” field until the background of the slider turns green. This shows you that the mute function is now activated and you will no longer receive calls from unknown numbers.

A data protection check is also available on WhatsApp

WhatsApp also offers the option of checking your own security settings in one place within the app. This makes it easier for users to keep track of things. With WhatsApp’s “Data Protection Check” you can see what security options the app offers and what settings you have currently made. You will be guided through your privacy settings in several steps and can determine the level of protection that is right for you. Among other things, you can check who can contact you, whether others can see when you were last online, or decide whether you want to make your WhatsApp account more secure with a screen lock or two-step verification.

You can find the “Data Protection Check” in the app settings under “Data Protection”. A field will then appear at the top where you can start checking your current settings and make possible changes.
