DLRG warns of danger to life on the ice

The cold temperatures invite you to walk on frozen surfaces. But experts urge caution – even in flood areas.
In view of frosty temperatures, the warns German Life Saving Society (DLRG) before entering ice surfaces – even in flood areas. “The ice on lakes and ponds is usually not yet stable,” said Alexander Paffrath. According to the association’s head of operations, there may be a risk to one’s life if one ventures onto the ice. This also applies to flooded areas.
“Currents and turbulences ensure that the ice layer only grows slowly in many places,” said Paffrath. Shrubs and bushes surrounded by ice also led to a reduced carrying capacity. Water draining under the frozen surface creates cavities, which further increases the risk of collapse, warned the rescue association with headquarters in Bad Nenndorf in Lower Saxony.
According to the DLRG, the areas are sometimes large and therefore difficult to access for emergency services. “Anyone who needs help probably has little chance of being saved,” warned Paffrath.
