Winemaker – More wine from Germany – Economy

Despite the summer drought, German winegrowers produced more wine last year. Wine and must production grew by six percent to 8.94 million hectoliters, as reported by the Federal Statistical Office. This exceeded the average for the years 2016 to 2021 by 3.5 percent. Two thirds of the wines produced were white wines, one third red wines (including rosé and rott). The equivalent of around 1.2 billion bottles were produced. “The 2022 wine year was characterized by a long dry period in summer,” according to the statistics office. At the same time, the dry summer resulted in less fungal infestation and thus had a positive effect on the health of the grapes. There were also no large-scale late frosts and major storm events such as hail.
