Windows on iPhone, Mac and iPad: Microsoft releases new app

Windows can now be installed on devices with iOS, iPadOS and macOS – although not the operating system itself, but a new app of the same name from Microsoft that allows remote access to Windows systems. The app, simply called “Windows”, also exists for Windows itself and as a web app. An Android version is currently not available.

The app, currently still referred to as a preview version, enables, among other things, access to Windows systems on a desktop computer or in the cloud to an Azure Virtual Desktop and a DevBox. Something similar is already possible with other remote desktop software. However, Microsoft’s new app is seen by specialist media as a sign that Windows could soon move more and more into the cloud.

The new app supports multiple monitors, allows custom screen resolutions, and redirection of peripherals such as webcams, storage devices, and printers. Currently, usability is limited to users with business or school accounts. However, hints in the login mask suggest that there are plans to also allow private Microsoft accounts.

Plans for a shift to the cloud were made, among other things, in a hearing before the US Trade Commission FTC. It was announced there that the option previously offered to companies would also be available to private users with Windows 365. The Windows app would also open the operating system to users who have a device that does not allow Windows to be installed.

The Windows app is currently not in the App Store, but only available via Apple’s developer testing platform Testflight. Microsoft points out that only a limited number of interested parties can take part in the test. Consider swapping participants over the course of the test phase in order to allow as many people as possible to take part in the preview.
