Large-scale operation on the Kiel Fjord: According to the police, a tornado crossed the keel line at around 6 p.m. on Wednesday evening. There were injuries.

Several rowers were busy with their boats on the jetty at the level of the Kiel yacht club when the windpants caught them and threw them into the fjord. According to the fire brigade, everyone could be saved. “You have been completely mixed up and people have fallen into the water,” said a spokesman for the fire department. Some of them got blown objects on their heads. According to eyewitnesses, first responders jumped into the water to pull people ashore. According to the fire brigade, four people were seriously injured, some others were moderately and slightly injured. They were taken to nearby hospitals.

Windhose destroys roofs

Previously, the Windhose had partially covered roofs in Kiel-Meimersdorf. Several roof tiles were then torn from houses in the Gaarden district as well. According to the police, it has not yet been conclusively clarified whether there was one or even two tornados.

Eyewitness: Windhose was fast

The rescue service arrived with several vehicles on the keel line.

An eyewitness reported to NDR Schleswig-Holstein that she was just able to get to safety. A short time later a birch fell over near the seal pool. The tornado had nourished itself very quickly over the Kiel fjord of the keel line, but the promenade was relatively empty at the time of the accident because it had rained before. The fire brigade and rescue service were deployed in large numbers. Around 60 workers were deployed for around two hours.

Meteorologist: “Something like that cannot be predicted”

The German Weather Service had previously announced squalls and heavy rain. It was not foreseeable that tornado could form. “Something like this is absolutely unpredictable,” said the Kiel graduate meteorologist Sebastian Wache from WetterWelt. The tornado originated on the outskirts of Kiel in the Meimersdorf district.

Was it a tornado?

“On the basis of pictures, we assume that it was a tornado,” said meteorologist Michael Bauditz from the German Weather Service (DWD) of the German Press Agency. He couldn’t say for good yet. Tornadoes are cyclones. They arise when there are large temperature differences and often occur in Central Europe together with thunderstorms. A trunk-like tube of cloud extends from the thundercloud down to the ground.
