He does his shopping in organic stores and buys “local and peasant” meat. He travels by metro, electric scooter and Vélib’ in Paris and rents cars to go on vacation. But not electric “because it’s difficult because of the lack of charging stations”. Yannick Jadot, candidate of the environmentalist pole for the presidential election, answered questions from Internet users during the “Live presidential” TF1- “20 Minutes” *. He unveiled some points of his program, which will be presented in its entirety on Saturday January 29, on the eve of the results of the popular Primary, of which he announced that he would refuse to recognize the results.
How will you make the transition to 100% organic farming?
Today, agriculture receives 14 billion euros in public aid every year, including 9 billion euros from Europe. This money must go to the transition. We will sign a major transition contract with the farmers, even if it means taking over their debts. Nobody says it’s easy, but organic farming must be everywhere in school canteens, in hospitals, in retirement homes.
What do you plan for the restriction of pesticides in the short term?
There is an epidemic of childhood cancers in our country due to pesticides and pollution. Over the course of a five-year term, the use of pesticides will have to be reduced by 50%, starting by banning glyphosate, neonicotinoids and SDHI fungicides, whose molecules are known to be carcinogenic.
How will you do to limit the rise in energy prices?
The emergency measure is an energy check of 400 euros for the 6 million poorest families and aid of 100 euros for the 15 million households whose income is just above the eligibility threshold for the energy check. Then, the first energy shield is the insulation of housing. This is between 500 and 700 euros in savings per year for families. The renovation of housing will be supported by the State for the most modest families.
Why do you want to reduce the speed on the highways to 120 km/h?
It’s not on my agenda, but I do think it’s worth discussing, as it’s a way to reduce air pollution and save fuel.
Apart from the car, what solutions do you offer for getting around?
I come from Picardy. And where I’m from, you need a car. I do not stigmatize at all those who have a car. I know it’s often the only way to get around. What I want is to offer the possibility of using it less by developing trains, coaches, carpooling and cycle paths.
Do you think that wind and solar energy will be enough to cover our electricity needs if you close the nuclear power stations?
The idea is not to replace nuclear power plants with wind turbines. The idea is first to save energy, for example through household appliances. I want to lower the VAT on repairable appliances and those that consume the least. I want to deploy renewable energies as much as possible, such as hydraulics, biomass, geothermal energy and photovoltaics. We can put solar panels on the roofs of schools, supermarkets, car parks. All this will allow us to be independent. As far as wind turbines are concerned, offshore wind power must be developed.
Why not join forces with the other left-wing candidates?
It is not enough that there is the union of the left to win. You need a project, answers, you have to be credible. I will not abandon my candidacy for other candidacies that do not make climate issues and social justice absolute issues.
How will you finance the citizen income of 880 euros per month?
Eradicating extreme poverty by ensuring that no one is below the poverty line from the age of 18 costs 20 billion euros per year. The main source of funding will be the restoration of a solidarity tax on wealth (ISF), which will be targeted at the richest 1%, that is to say from 2 million in assets. This ISF will also be subject to a bonus-malus system, depending on whether the heritage contributes to climate change or to solving the climate problem.
Will you legalize cannabis from the start of your five-year term?
Yes. But then, it will be necessary to set up state production and sale in particular places with trained personnel. This is a public health and safety issue. State production will fund campaigns against addiction among young people and support them.
What is your position on GPA?
If it comes from any commodification of the female body, total ban. Surrogacy will only be authorized if there is no market relationship, if it is a gestation of generosity. And I am in favor of the recognition of children born of surrogacy abroad. I want justice, in general, to always protect children.
What will you do for inheritance tax?
We will not tax inheritances below 200,000 euros. Taxation will then be progressive and quite high on large fortunes. This return of between 8 and 9 billion euros per year will be used to finance the dependency of our elders.
Why do you want to introduce voting from the age of 16?
By voting from the age of 16, this means that the first vote will be made during the high school period. This will allow, within the framework of the studies, to learn the vote, the democracy, the institutions, and to reconcile the young people with our democracy.
What are you planning for the hunt?
I want to ban hunting on weekends and during school holidays. Everyone should be able to enjoy nature. I will also put an end to hunting with hounds, which is not a good tradition, and to the breeding of animals intended to be hunted.
How do you intend to fight radical Islam?
We must fight the enemies of the Republic by preventing them from settling. To do this, we must ensure that, in all our territories, there are public services, prospects for working, going to school, going to hospital, being able to move around. It is when populations are abandoned that associations which do not respect the laws of the Republic can settle.
