The federal government announced the major expansion of wind energy, but little has happened since then. What is important now, so that progress can finally be made.

The good news first: Energy consumption in Germany this year will probably fall to its lowest level since reunification in 1990. What is less gratifying is that the reduction targets for climate-damaging greenhouse gas emissions are likely to be torn down. The comeback of coal in particular is ruining the CO₂ balance. All of these are direct consequences of the Ukraine war and the resulting energy crisis.
