Instead of duke and duchess, in the future it should simply be called: William and Kate. The heir to the throne and his wife want to make some changes to royal protocol.

Officially they are the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, but most know them as William and Kate. It was under this name that the British took the heir to the throne and his wife to their hearts. If the two royals have their way, they should continue to be addressed in this way by their compatriots.

As several British media reports, the couple plan to modernize the monarchy and relax the strict protocol. The trigger for the initiative is said to have been the not very pleasant one-week Caribbean tour of the two.

The Cambridges toured Belize, Jamaica and the Bahamas in late March to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee. It was supposed to be a charm offensive, but there were several violent protests against the visit of the two royals. Demonstrators accused the British Crown of having enriched itself from slavery and demanded reparations. Prince William in particular is said to have “boiled with anger inside”, revealed a royal expert at the time.

During the Caribbean tour, William and Kate are said to have realized that the monarchy is not always contemporary. “They want to be more approachable, less formal, less stiff and break with some of the tradition,” a palace insider told the British newspaper the Daily Mirror. In order to achieve this, they want to be addressed by their first names in the future, the insider continues. They want to give the royal family a modern touch.

After Belize and Jamaica, the Bahamas was the last stop on Prince William and his wife’s eight-day trip. The visits were seen as a charm offensive for Queen Elizabeth II’s 70th jubilee after the Caribbean state of Barbados split from the British crown last year and became a republic. But alongside jubilant subjects, William and Kate also encountered rejection and demands for apologies and reparations for wrongs committed through slavery and oppression in the former colonies.

The protests could therefore have a greater impact than initially expected. And as many demonstrators hoped: So far, the Crown has not made any promises for reparations. But they could ultimately have given the initial impetus for modernizing the monarchy.
