Meat lovers and vegans debate in the star-DISKUTHEK in cooperation with the Körber Foundation on the question of whether laboratory meat should become part of our diet in the future.

Are you not allowed to eat meat at all if you are serious about animal welfare? And in view of the many environmental problems, will we need meat from the laboratory in the future? In this stern-DISKUTHEK episode, the vegan and Youtuber (“Vegan is unhealthy”) Gordon Prox, the laboratory meat researcher and professor at Reutlingen University of Applied Sciences Petra Kluger, TV cook and restaurateur Cornelia Poletto and Reinhard Jung, cattle breeder and policy advisor will debate this the initiative “Free Farmers”.

Can Laboratory Meat Save Us?

Cook Poletto and cattle farmer Jung take a very clear position against laboratory meat. Poletto reports that she is a meat lover, but says: “Before I eat meat from the laboratory, I don’t need meat.” And farmer Jung even announced: “We will fight that politically. We as free farmers demand that artificial meat and laboratory meat be banned in principle.”

Researcher Kluger is opposed to this. She considers laboratory meat to be an important and useful addition and, as a researcher, does not see herself as a competitor to the farmers. “I don’t want to take market share away from anyone. I want to create knowledge here,” she says. Vegan Prox believes it is unrealistic that all people will at some point give up meat. But he does not want to accept the argument that the principle from the animal kingdom (eat and be eaten) should automatically be practiced by humans: “Because lions lick their butts, do I now? I find that very difficult . ”

stern-DISKUTHEK cooperates with the Körber Foundation

This is the first stern-DISKUTHEK after a long Corona break and the first episode for which we have partnered. We have teamed up with the Hamburg Körber Foundation – there, too, value is placed on fair and constructive debates. We will produce five joint programs this year. Namely as DISKUTHEK @ KörberForum – if Corona allows it in front of an audience in the foundation’s forum in Hamburg’s Speicherstadt. So we bring our talk show live on stage. Because of the pandemic, we recorded this first broadcast under strict hygiene rules without an audience. We hope that next time we will be able to greet some of our spectators live on site. We will let you know!

To the DISKUTHEK guests:

Reinhard Jung is an organic farmer, cattle breeder and policy officer for the “Free Farmers” initiative.

Petra Kluger is a professor at Reutlingen University and studied technical biology. She researches laboratory meat (https://biomat.reutlingen-university.de/de/kluger-lab/research-projects/microlungdetect/).

Cornelia Poletto is a TV cook and restaurateur in Hamburg.

Gordon Prox is a vegan, influencer and entrepreneur from Hamburg. Together with Aljosha Muttardi, he runs the YouTube channel “Vegan is unhealthy”.
