The push is exciting. The economist Monika Schnitzer wants to abolish the widow’s pension, at least for new marriages. CDU politicians speak of a “frontal attack on families”. But Schnitzer is right: the widow’s pension is neither up-to-date nor fair and it keeps women from working. It should be replaced by a new model after a transitional period.
