Why the story of the Christmas miracle remains so current – opinion

The Christmas story is a story of wondrous and provocative perversions – and it resists despair of the world because it is too good not to be true. About hope, comfort and a clear message.

This Christmas picture does without a crib, shepherd and angels; no ox, no donkey, no holy family; just a diaper, that of the newborn. This is actually not a Christmas picture at all, it is a crucifixion picture: You see a bloody torn body, a mouth open to suffocation, the lips discolored blue. And you can see a tattered piece of cloth wrapped around the battered body as a loincloth. This is exactly the piece of cloth on which the baby Jesus is lying on another picture of the Isenheim Altarpiece.
