The final text of the Dubai climate summit praises CO2 capture. A consecration for this technology promoted by fossil fuel producers, but costly, inefficient and mainly used to extract more oil.
What is hidden behind the mysterious English word unabated, become omnipresent in climate negotiations? And behind its now unmasked corollary, carbon capture technologies, promoted by the final decision of COP28 in Dubai adopted on Wednesday? Wouldn’t this be the trick of the century, a genius idea from fossil fuel industrialists and producing countries to continue to extract oil, gas and coal by claiming – wrongly – that climate catastrophe can thus be avoided? ?
Certainly, for the first time in the history of the COPs, Dubai’s final decision mentions fossil fuels, by far the main culprits of global warming (they represent more than 75% of global greenhouse gas emissions). But it is to better open the door for them. Exit the objective of “exit” fossils, yet essential to stay below +1.5°C of warming. The document simply calls on States to contribute “each in their own way” Has “global efforts” to engage a “transition away from fossil fuels” (in particular via “transition energies”, therefore fossil gas… first trick). These “global efforts” concerns in particular “acceleration
