Why is France (still not) the home of fantastic cinema?

Take a seat, the high mass of fantasy and horror opens its doors in the Vosges. Cannibals, fairies and zombies are expected at the 31st edition of the Gérardmer International Fantastic Film Festival, until January 28.

A festival, a meeting with the public, to discover films in the fantasy, horror and “fantasy” genres. But why France, where science fiction cinema was invented, with The journey to the moon by Georges Méliès in 1902, does it release so few films, and does it attract so few spectators?

A living literary tradition, quality video games

Why this neglect, when the literatures of the imagination are living their best life, with a Goncourt 2020 with a fantastic (novel) The Anomaly by Hervé Le Tellier? And that, in terms of video games, France is recognized throughout the world for the know-how of its studios and the quality of productions?

So, once again, why are there no French successes at the Dracula by Coppola, Ring by Hideo Nakata, to the long-term sagas Star Trek Or The Lord of the Rings ? Could it be out of intellectual snobbery, because of lack of funding, or because of technical difficulties?

“For a long time, a B or even Z series cinema”

To talk about it in this new episode of the “Minute Papillon!” », Caroline Vié, “cinema” journalist at the editorial staff of 20 minutes. “Indeed, it was not in the French tradition to make cinema [fantastique], especially horror films. It was quite rare and often missed,” underlines the journalist in this interview.

Could this be a problem of cinematic culture? “For horror, it’s a cultural problem. For a long time, horror cinema was considered a B or even Z series cinema. So there was little audience, recalls Caroline Vié. For American cinema, this changed with films like Dracula by Coppola who made horror cinema quality and mainstream cinema. And it took a long time to have repercussions in France…”

Is France lagging behind due to a lack of funding? Because she would miss good stories? Or because of special effects studios? Film journalist Caroline Vié answers all these questions, and many more. To thrill, go to the audio player above. Good listening !
