White march for Nahel, decision on the hijab in football and first flight for Virgin Galactic

Did you miss the news this early morning? We’ve put together a recap to help you see things more clearly.

The violence escalated further last night in France. For the second time in a row, the night from Wednesday to Thursday was particularly tense in the Paris suburbs but also in other cities in France. At the source of this urban violence: the death of Nahel, 17, killed in Nanterre on Tuesday by a policeman because of a refusal to comply. Since the death of the young man in the Hauts-de-Seine, the clashes have crescendoed. During the night from Wednesday to Thursday, they were thus more important than the day before, spreading in many municipalities in Île-de-France but also in Toulouse, Dijon, in the metropolis of Lyon… A total of 150 people were arrested, reported Gérald Darmanin who denounced “unbearable violence against symbols of the Republic”. Emmanuel Macron, for his part, convened an interministerial crisis unit for this Thursday at 8 a.m.

It is a decision that is likely to be widely commented on by the political class. The Council of State must say this Thursday if it authorizes the wearing of the hijab in women’s football, a prospect which has already triggered an avalanche of reactions and criticism, and the assurance of the government to be “mobilized” for the secularism. The highest administrative court rules three days after examining an appeal by the collective of Muslim women “Les Hijabeuses” against the French Football Federation (FFF), which prohibits them from playing veiled during competitions. During the hearing on Monday, the public rapporteur, who says the law and whose opinion is generally followed, went in the direction of these players by asking that the Federation modify its rules.

Take-off is imminent for Virgin Galactic. The space tourism company is due to make its first commercial flight in space this Thursday in the United States, with the Italian Air Force as its client. This is a major step for the company, which however comes years late. The company, founded in 2004 by billionaire Richard Branson, has already reached space five times, but so far with only members of the company as passengers. The new mission, called Galactic 01, must take off from the base of Spaceport America, in the desert of the State of New Mexico. A live video will be broadcast on the company’s website from 9 am (local time).
